Château Montbenault, Coteaux du Layon Fayé – a pre-shipment offer

Following the success of our other Loire offerings from Vouvray and Bourgueil, we have now added another domaine to our selection, from the region of Faye  in the famous Coteaux du Layon appellation.

Traditional winemaking is used at Chateau Montbenault to produce classic Moelleux wines from the Chenin Blanc variety. These wines age beautifully.

The young Coteaux du Layon offers an excellent substitute for Alsace Pinot Gris at half the price for the quality, whilst the top cuvées are produced from selective “tris”. We have a limited quantity of older vintages also available. The red and rosé from the domaine are also delicious, and will be excellent for drinking in the warmer spring weather.

2005 Coteaux du Layon Vieilles Vignes, Château Montbenault
Youthful floral appley fruit, with hints of honeysuckle and flowers. Soft, off-dry fruity white, delicious aperitif wine.
£54.00 per case of 6 bottles

2005 Coteaux du Layon Fayé, Clos de Poirier Bourgeau
The two top vineyard sites of the domaine are now vinified separately in top vintages. The Poirier is a little sweeter in style than the Herse, with rich honeyed floral fruit, forward and delicious.
£100.00 per case of 6 bottles

2003 Coteaux du Layon Fayé, Clos de Poirier Bourgeau
Honeyed botrytis nose and palate, floral and very appealing.
£100.00 per case of 6 bottles

2005 Coteaux du Layon Fayé, Clos de la Herse
The Herse is a little more mineral in style than the Poirier, with notes of new mown hay and flinty ripe fruit.
£77.70 per case of 6 bottles

1989 Coteaux du Layon Fayé, Clos de la Herse
Softer and more evolved, with waxy honeyed soft fruit flavours, delicious now.
£89.00 per case of 6 bottles

1990 Coteaux du Layon Fayé, Clos de la Herse
1990 was an exceptional vintage, and this cuvee is just starting to show its potential, although it will continue to improve for many years. Concentrated ripe honeyed botrytis fruit flavours with clean balancing acidity, and excellent length and finish.
£120.00 per case of 6 bottles

1976 Coteaux du Layon Fayé
We have only a limited quantity of this wine. Gold colour. Honeyed evolved barley sugar nose and palate, off-dry, with good balancing acidity and excellent length. Classic soft mature Chenin, with hints of wax and lanolin. Drinking very well now.

2004 Opening Offer, Domaine de Trévallon

2004 saw the return to more normal climatic conditions in Provence, and Eloï Durrbach has produced a very finely balanced red in 2004, which, as usual, will age well over a period of ten to twenty years. For us the 2004 combines the elegance of the 2000 with the power and concentration of the 2001.

The 2004 will be shipped after bottling in Spring 2007.

Pure Petit Verdot……….
Domaine de Ravanès Prime Verd

Whilst customers await the offers of the 2005 Bordeaux wines – another vintage of the century, apparently – we have the latest vintage of Le Prime Verd, a pure petit Verdot from Domaine de Ravanès to the north of Béziers.

Marc and Guy Benin planted this variety in the 1980s, and the first vintage of this cuvée was in 1995. Since then they have produced the cuvée only in 1997, 1999 and 2002.

Although this is a variety found primarily in small percentages in Bordeaux, it grows better in the warmer climate of the Languedoc. Bruno Prats once said that he would have loved to have more petit Verdot at Cos d’Estournel, but that it was difficult to ripen.

The 2002 is very much in the style of the delicious 1997; spicy and earthy now, this will develop exuberant gamey flavours with age.

2002 Le Prime Verd, Domaine de Ravanès
£115.00 per 6 bottles
£225.00 per 12 bottles
