Mas Cal Demoura
Jean Pierre Jullien
Jean Pierre Jullien is the father of Olivier
Jullien, with whom we have worked since the 1980s. Jean Pierre worked with the co-operative for many years before starting his own domaine with Olivier’s encouragement.
He has just handed over the domaine to a young vigneron, after his
eleventh vintage. His wines are found in many of the best
restaurant lists in France.
Jean Pierre has eight and a half hectares of vines around the village of Jonquières on the Terrasses de Larzac, planted with the traditional varieties of the region, grenache, syrah, mourvèdre, cinsault and carignan. His wines are aged in oak and in fiberglass, and show outstandingly clean, vibrant fruit character. Yields are low, at between 25 and 30 hectolitres per hectare, and the wines are supple, ripe and approachable, yet with good ageing ability. (The 1994 is still drinking remarkably well now).
The
Infidèle is a blend of syrah, grenache, and mourvèdre, with some
cinsault and carignan, with a long cuvaison and 18 months ageing, twelve in oak, and six months in cuve after blending. The 2000 is just starting to drink well now, with rich, silky ripe licorice cassis fruit flavours. The 2001 still needs several years to show at its best. When looking for a name for his “second” cuvee, he thought of a small building, or “Mas” which he had recently restored from a ruin. This Mas, in the middle of the vines, was a traditional trysting place of the village many years ago, and also he had just become a grandfather, hence the name,
Cuvée des Amours. This is a softer, suppler, style of wine, fresh, silky ripe fruit flavours, already delicious, but capable of ageing at least five years. |
