Roc d’Anglade, Coteaux du Languedoc
Remy Pedréno
Remy Pedreno’s domaine is to the west of Nîmes, where his
beautifully tended vines give very low yields (23 hectolitres per
hectare in 2000). The wine is aged for around 18 months in oak,
one third new, one third one wine old, the other third two wines
old. The grapes are not de-stemmed, and the cuvaison lasts about
three weeks.
The Red, up to the 2001 vintage, was a blend of 60% to 70%
syrah; the balance is Grenache, with spicy soft peppery fruit and
good backbone, elegant juicy Grenache with spicy syrah overtones,
and a smoky syrah finish. The 1999 is the more powerful minerally
vintage, the 2000 more elegant and silky. His wines have great
finesse, and although approachable in their youth, will age well.
From the 2001 vintage, Remy has acquired some 25 year old Carignan
vines, and the 2001 and 2002 have 25% Carignan, 25% Grenache, and
50% Syrah. The difference in blend, allied with the powerful fruit
of the 2001 vintage, gives a spicier, firm elegant fruit, with
more backbone than the previous vintages. The 2002 vintage is more
classic then 2001, but in the same style, with good structure and
length. The 2002 was a very small vintage, and our allocation is
only half of the usual quantity.
The White, produced for the first time in 2002, is from
Chenin Blanc, with a little Grenache Blanc, vinified in oak
barriques, with yields of 15 hectolitres per hectare. Dry, full
flavoured, with ripe apple and peach flavours and good balancing
acidity. The Moelleux, produced in very small quantities,
is soft, medium sweet and quite delicious. (See also Clos de la
Belle)
