Robert Creus

Robert Creus works for the Chamber of Commerce, and produces his quirky wines from tiny vineyards in the village of Saint Series. He has one and a half hectares of Grenache, syrah and Carignan, with half a hectare of very old vine bush pruned Carignan, from which he produces a separate Cuvée Léonie. This is “garage wine” at its best. When we were searching for the “winery”, it took the memory of a municipal worker, who recalled having seen a car with a trailer-load of grapes turning into a small, residential bungalow, to track down the Creus household. There are only minute quantities of each cuvée available, vinified literally in the garage.
The wines are very ripe, oaky, and baked in style, with flavours of prunes, chocolate and smoke. You either love them or hate them. The 1999 is intensely spicy and gamey, with baked raspberry and blackcurrant flavours, and an elusive smoky richness. Drinking very well now. The 2001 Cuvée Léonie is powerful and spicy, with firm ripe tannins, and deliciously clean fresh fruit. The Cuvée Sylvie, from syrah, is silky, supple, powerful, with an intense spiciness and concentration. The Cuvée Los Abuelos, from very old vine grenache, is rich ripe and supple, with sweet richness and concentration, black pepper and plum fruit flavours, and a long, satisfying finish.
