Domaine Vaquer
Fernand et Frédérique Vaquer
Domaine Vaquer’s wines are regarded as some of the finest wines of the Roussillon, and can be found on top restaurant wine lists in the region. Unfortunately they are less well known in the UK.
Their l'Ephemere Rosé is one of our favourites, from carignan and
syrah, with crushed raspberry flavours, a more serious style of wine which is
delicious with salmon. We have very small quantities left of their 1990 Cuvée
Fernand Vaquer red, a cuvee of pure carignan. We have just shipped the
1991, a soft, evolved mellow red, with hints of cloves and mint, surprisingly
elegant. A cross between the sweetness of old Chateauneuf and old Claret. Their
younger red, 2001 L'Exception, is from grenache, carignan, and a little
syrah. This cuvée is the exception because it is aged in oak. Powerful spicy
peppery dry fruit, mouthfulling. Needs keeping for three to four years.
We also have some cuvées of their outstanding Rivesaltes. The 1999 L'Extrait
is from grenache noir, with powerful peppery firm spicy cocoa fruit, and
firm tannins. Already delicious. Post Scriptum is from 1995 vin de presse
grenache, aged in cuve for 6 years. Chocolate toffee flavours, more "rancio",
oxidative in style, delicious with blue cheeses. The 1993 Preface is from
grenache gris, grenache blanc, and maccabeu, aged in cuve. Rancio orange peel
nose, with nutty toffee caramel fruit, more delicate in style, with a clean
dryness on the finish. This is surprisingly delicious with caramel nut brittle.
The Vieux Rivesaltes is a solera, produced in very small quantities, from Grenache Gris and Malvoisie, and aged for many years in oak foudres.
